We've traveled from the pioneers through the Eurorack revolution to VCV Rack's software modular. Now we stand in the 2020s, where the boundaries between analog and digital, hardware and software, have completely dissolved. Welcome to hybrid modular.
What is Hybrid Modular?
Hybrid modular is about combining the best of all worlds:
- Analog warmth from classic oscillators and filters
- Digital precision and infinite possibilities from DSP modules
- DAW integration via MIDI, CV, and Ableton Link
- Software modular like VCV Rack integrated in the flow
- Programmable modules you can code yourself
The modern modular producer doesn't choose between analog and digital – they use both, often in the same patch.
Ableton Link: Wireless Synchronization
Ableton Link is a protocol that synchronizes tempo and phase between devices on the same network. It's free, open, and supported by hundreds of apps and hardware devices.
Why Link is Revolutionary
Before Link, synchronization between software and hardware was a nightmare of MIDI clock jitter, latency compensation, and frustrating drift. Link solves this by:
- Synchronizing tempo down to sample-level precision
- Maintaining phase – so the downbeat always hits simultaneously
- Working over WiFi – no cables necessary
- Being decentralized – no "master" device, all are equal
For modular users, this means Eurorack sequencers, VCV Rack, iPad apps, and DAWs can run in perfect sync without MIDI cables.
Hardware with Link Support
More and more Eurorack modules include Link support:
- Pamela's New Workout (ALM Busy Circuits) – clock/modulation generator with Link
- Tempi (Make Noise) – can sync to Link via firmware update
- Hermod+ (Squarp) – full-featured sequencer with Link
CV Tools: Your DAW as Modular Brain
CV Tools is a collection of Max for Live devices (included in Ableton Live Suite) that converts MIDI to control voltage (CV). With a DC-coupled audio interface, you can send CV directly to your Eurorack.
What is DC-Coupling?
Normal audio interfaces block DC (direct current) – they're designed for AC audio signals. CV signals are often DC or very slowly moving. DC-coupled interfaces allow these signals to pass, so you can send CV from software to hardware.
Popular DC-coupled interfaces:
- Expert Sleepers ES-8 – 8 DC-coupled outputs, Eurorack format
- Expert Sleepers ES-9 – standalone USB interface with 16 outputs
- MOTU Ultralite – desktop interface with DC-coupled outputs
- Focusrite Clarett (some models) – budget-friendly option
CV Tools Devices
- CV Instrument – convert MIDI notes to CV pitch + gate
- CV LFO – generate CV modulation signals
- CV Utility – scale and offset CV signals
- CV Shaper – draw custom envelope shapes
- CV Triggers – convert audio transients to gates
Setup: Control Eurorack from Ableton
- Connect DC-coupled interface (e.g., Expert Sleepers ES-8) to your Eurorack
- Create Audio Track in Live, add CV Instrument
- Set output to the relevant interface output
- Create MIDI clip or play live – CV is sent to your hardware
- Add CV LFO on another output for modulation
Now you can sequence and modulate your Eurorack directly from Live's timeline.
Daisy Seed: Programmable Modular
Daisy Seed is a small microcontroller platform from Electrosmith, designed specifically for audio and music. It's the foundation for a revolution in DIY and programmable modular.
What is Daisy?
Daisy Seed is a small ARM-based microcontroller with:
- 24-bit / 96kHz stereo audio codec
- 480MHz processor – powerful enough for complex DSP
- USB, MIDI, CV I/O
- Open source toolchain – program in C++, Max/MSP Gen~, Pure Data, or Faust
For modular users, this means you can build your own modules – from simple utilities to complex synthesizers and effects.
Daisy-Based Modules
Several Eurorack manufacturers use Daisy as a platform:
- Noise Engineering – uses Daisy in several modules
- Qu-Bit – Daisy-powered effects
- Electrosmith Patch – official Eurorack module with Daisy
Program It Yourself!
The exciting thing about Daisy is that you don't need to be a programmer to use it. Several visual environments are supported:
- Max/MSP Gen~ – export directly from Max to Daisy
- Pure Data – open source visual programming, export to Daisy via Heavy compiler
- FAUST – functional DSP language
- Oopsy – Max for Live integration
Imagine: you design a synth algorithm in Max, export to Daisy, and have a physical Eurorack module with your own code.
Mutable Instruments' Open Source Legacy
We mentioned in part 2 that Émilie Gillet open-sourced all Mutable Instruments designs. This philosophy lives on and has inspired a whole generation of open source hardware:
- Ornament & Crime – multi-function module with open source firmware
- Monome Teletype – scriptable CV generator
- Disting (Expert Sleepers) – multi-function module with custom firmwares
- VCV Rack itself – open source platform
Open source means you can:
- Build modules yourself from public schematics
- Modify firmware for your needs
- Learn from others' code and improve your own designs
Hybrid Workflow: An Example
Let's look at a concrete example of a modern hybrid setup:
Hardware
- Eurorack: Mutable Instruments Plaits (oscillator), Make Noise Maths (modulation), Intellijel Quadrax (envelopes)
- Interface: Expert Sleepers ES-8 (DC-coupled)
- Clock: ALM Pamela's New Workout with Ableton Link
Software
- Ableton Live with CV Tools
- VCV Rack as VST (Pro version) for extra modules
Workflow
- Sequencing in Live: MIDI clips control Eurorack via CV Instrument
- Modulation from VCV: VCV Rack plugin generates complex CV signals
- Analog processing: Audio from Eurorack comes back to Live via ES-8
- Sync: Everything synchronizes via Ableton Link – no jitter
- Recording: Final audio is recorded in Live's arrangement view
This setup combines DAW's editing power with hardware's physical interface and VCV's infinite modules.
The Future: AI in Modular?
An exciting new area is the integration of machine learning in modular:
- Neutone – AI audio effects that can run on Daisy
- RAVE (Realtime Audio Variational autoEncoder) – neural audio synthesis
- NN~ for Max/MSP – run neural networks in Max, export to hardware
We're only beginning to see what happens when modular synthesis meets AI. Imagine a module that learns your playing style and generates complementary patterns, or a filter that has learned to emulate vintage hardware from audio samples.
Try Hybrid Thinking in Ableton
You don't need hardware to experiment with hybrid workflows. Here's an exercise that simulates the concept:
Exercise: Simulate Hybrid Setup in Live
- Create a MIDI Track with Drift – this is your "hardware oscillator"
- Create an Audio Track with VCV Rack Pro – generate modulation here
- In VCV: Build an LFO system with Marbles (random), quantizer, and multiple outputs
- Use Max for Live LFO device to route modulation to Drift's parameters
- Add effects on a separate Audio Track – think of it as your "outboard processing"
- Synchronize everything with Live's tempo via Link
You now have a complete hybrid system, all in software – ready to add hardware when you're ready.
